Seriously appalled at the SG Elections

Coming from a state (previously community) college, I am literally so taken back at the morals and ethics of some of these candidates and the people helping them campaign. I find it unbelievable that a community college, which is so frequently looked down upon, has higher moral and ethical standards for their student leaders.

As SGA President at Palm Beach State College, it was one of my main duties (towards the end of my term) to ensure that the new Presidential candidates were remaining ethical during all their campaigning, and personal ventures. The golden rule was to keep the goals and missions of the school the focus of their campaign, and to not do anything that the administration would frown upon. I can’t even imagine what consequences one would face back at Palm Beach State if individuals were seen throwing away newspapers, writing heinous and degrading articles (such as the one on TFM), bribing and coercing individuals to vote for them (Sig Kap girl), or being video taped bad mouthing other candidates or respective affiliates. Not only would the candidate most likely be disqualified, but I’d also get in trouble for letting it happen.

Where is the civility? Where are the respectable and classy leaders whom students should truly be looking up to? Do these people actually expect students to vote for them? I would never ever want any of the individuals who participated in the activities described above to represent me. Is there not a Civility & Ethics committee on this campus? Or a Director of Elections (which was my position on the state of Florida SGA executive board) who is in charge of keeping these individuals in line? I’m truly quite embarrassed to say I go to this school right now.

For gods sake, UF SG candidates, clean it up and keep it classy. You’re making the rest of us look bad.
